for Teaching about Asia Alumni Study
Tours Established in 1992 by the East Asia Resource Center and the Hyogo Business and Cultural Center, the Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute is a multipart project that brings together American and Japanese teachers to promote mutual understanding and deepen their knowledge of each other’s country. In alternate summers, teachers from Washington State travel to Japan, visiting Washington’s sister prefecture of Hyogo as well as other regions. The teachers tour schools, experience a homestay with Japanese teachers, and visit sites of historic and cultural interest. A group of Hyogo teachers visits Washington and attends an Education Forum hosted by Seattle-area teachers. Thanks to the support of the Freeman Foundation, most program expenses are covered for the participants. Please visit our Web site again in fall 2007 for details about the 2008 study tour. The Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute project also sponsors teacher workshops about Japan during the school year. Summer institutes about Japan, with different topics in different years, are open to teachers from across the country. Generous funding from the Freeman Foundation helps make the Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute possible. The China Teacher
Leadership Project The China Teacher Leadership Project, established by the EARC in 1998, is a national project that promotes teacher leadership in teaching and learning about China. A series of experiences, from workshops to intensive summer institutes, offers teachers in all stages of their careers, ongoing opportunities to build and deepen their knowledge of China. Teachers may choose to participate in a variety of programs, including evening and weekend workshops, two-week summer institutes on the UW campus, and a three-week study tour to China. A library of exemplary curriculum materials about China provides additional resources for educators in the Seattle area. Summer institutes and study tours offer teachers the opportunity to: explore China studies with experts in the field, become familiar with teaching resources about China in a variety of media, and develop curriculum materials for use in the classroom. The China Teacher Leadership Project study tour provides educators' with firsthand experience living and traveling in China for three weeks. The study tour features visits to sites of historic importance, opportunities to observe Chinese schools and talk with educators, and exploration of China's geographic and cultural diversity. Alumni of the China study tour are encouraged to serve as resources for their colleagues and schools by sharing their experiences and teaching ideas in formal and informal settings. The next China Teacher Leadership Project study tour to China will take place in 2007. Funding from the Freeman Foundation makes it possible to subsidize most of the costs of participation.
