The East Asia Resource Center offers summer institutes at the University of Washington through two of its major projects, the China Teacher Leadership Project and the Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute.
2007 CHINA SUMMER INSTITUTE: PERSPECTIVES ON THE MODERN
Join us at the University of Washington for Perspectives on the Modern, an intensive summer institute exploring the multiple perspectives of modernity in East Asia during this period. Examine the concept of modernity with UW faculty and other expert speakers who will explore topics drawn from the arts and literature, belief systems, societal values, and politics. The talks are paired with sessions about teaching resources and discussions about how to help students develop analytical skills applicable to understanding change and modernity. Many sessions will emphasize visual literacy skills while examining evidence of the modern in arenas as different as architecture and lifestyle choices. The cost of the summer institute is
$150, payable upon acceptance. Housing, meals, reading materials,
and most other expenses are covered by a grant from the Freeman
Foundation. Participants are encouraged to live on campus since the
institute includes evening activities. Two UW credits or Washington
clock hours are available at no additional charge. The EARC will offer a study tour to China during the summer of 2007 through the China Teacher Leadership project. See the Study Tour page for further details.
THE CHINA TEACHER LEADERSHIP PROJECT The China Teacher Leadership Project, established by the EARC in 1998, is a national project that promotes teacher leadership in teaching and learning about China. A series of experiences, from workshops to intensive summer institutes, offers teachers in all stages of their careers, ongoing opportunities to build and deepen their knowledge of China. Teachers may choose to participate in a variety of programs, including evening and weekend workshops, two-week summer institutes on the UW campus, and a three-week study tour to China. A library of exemplary curriculum materials about China provides additional resources for educators in the Seattle area. Summer institutes and study tours offer teachers the opportunity to: explore China studies with experts in the field, become familiar with teaching resources about China in a variety of media, and develop curriculum materials for use in the classroom. Funding from the Freeman Foundation makes it possible to subsidize most of the costs of participation.
WASHINGTON-HYOGO TEACHER INSTITUTE Other components of the Washington-Hyogo Teacher Institute include study tours to Japan, an Education Forum in Seattle at which Japanese teachers are hosted by American counterparts, and teacher workshops about Japan during the school year. The next study tour and forum are scheduled for 2008. For further information about study tours, summer institutes, and workshops, please contact the East Asia Resource Center at (206) 543-1921 or by e-mail at earc@u.washington.edu.
