Wingfield Lab: Seasonal Breeding Research

Description:

North American sparrow species locationsSouth American sparrow species locations A long term study (began in 1974) on the environmental and hormonal control of breeding, migration and molt in sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys and Zonotrichia capensis) along latitudinal gradients from 70°N to 55°S. Currently we are determining whether mechanisms (e.g. photoperiodism) by which southern hemisphere birds respond to environmental cues are similar to those in the north; or whether totally different mechanisms are used to cope with seasonality.
