Mission Statement for ECT
Our mission at the UW Ethnic Cultural Center/ Theatre is to provide productions and events that expose the campus community to the richness of ethnicity, culture and theatre. The ECT works to create an avenue to inspire local artists and young people to take an interest in the University.

Our History
On March 2, 1972, the Ethnic Cultural Theatre opened its doors in a converted warehouse across the street from the Ethnic Cultural Center. The Theatre was an important element of the Center's design. Its purpose was to increase awareness of all cultures through the performing arts. UW President Charles Odegaard and Vice President for Minority Affairs Samuel Kelly participated in the opening ceremonies for the 166-seat theatre. For the opening performance, students staged a multicultural variety show titled "In Living Color," featuring dance, song, poetry, skits, and dramatic readings. Initially the ECT met its mission by serving as the home of the Seattle Group Theatre, one of the nation's premiere multi-cultural theatres. It was a wonderful marriage which served both organizations well. When the Group relocated to Seattle Center a few years ago, the ECT was faced with the question, "How do we continue producing quality multi-cultural theatre on our own?" The ECT now produces an annual season of events featuring performances, readings, concerts, and films. In addition to producing its own season, the ECT is available for rent. While priority is given to UW activities, several local theatre companies including Seattle Shakespeare Festival and Jet City Improv have been tenants in recent years.
