Day of Service

A Brief History of the MLK Day of Service

Martin Luther King Jr.

“We are not makers of history. We are made by History”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 1983, in respect of his fight for social equality and selfless service, the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was fashioned into a federal holiday. This holiday, initially celebrated in 1986, was reorganized in 1994 and became the only federal holiday that is also a national day of service. Bearing “A Day On, not A Day Off,” as its ageless slogan, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service will be held on January 21st, 2013 in which millions of Americans will be doing their part to ensure that they can answer a question that Dr. King posed over 50 years ago; “Life’s most persistent question is: What are you doing for others?
