Monarch: Faculty-Student Mentorship Program

LWB is launching a new Faculty Mentorship Program!

Are you an undocumented student interested in making a personal connection to a UW faculty member?

Are you an educator interested in offering mentorship to an undocumented student?

For students, having a personal contact on the faculty can make a huge difference in making the university a more welcoming place. Mentors can help advise students on the “unwritten rules” of succeeding at UW and beyond, including:

  • Applying to a major
  • Figuring out what’s important to succeed in classes
  • Getting letters of recommendation for grad school
  • Networking for internships and jobs

But they can also just be a familiar face in an environment that can otherwise seem impersonal – an office where you know you are welcomed, a sounding board for ideas, and someone trusted who checks in every so often to hear how you’re doing.

What’s required to participate?

For faculty
Faculty are not required to provide specific legal or academic assistance to student mentees – only a personal connection and some help navigating the college experience. Each mentor/mentee relationship will be different; the only requirements are that you:

  1. Attend an UndocuAlly Training prior to participating in this program
  2. Sign up Fall 2018 – Date TBD
  3. Attend the LWB Mentorship Meet up at the ECC to meet your mentee(s)
  4. Initiate contact at least once per quarter after that, during winter and spring quarters 2018. This could mean inviting your mentee to meet one-on-one in your office or over coffee, checking in by email to see how things are going, inviting your mentee to a UW sporting event or community gathering… the relationship could continue beyond spring 2018 if both parties want. All we ask is that participating faculty and students give it a try.

For students

  1. Sign up Fall 2018 – Date TBD
  2. Attend the LWB Mentorship Meet up at the ECC to meet your mentor
  3. Let your mentor know if s/he can support you. Even if you don’t have a specific question, just getting together to chat about life is also ok!
