When you arrive at I-LABS,
you will be greeted at our front desk by a receptionist.

The receptionist will let us know that you have arrived, and you and your infant can relax in our family lobby until one of our research assistants comes down to greet you and bring you up to our laboratory.

Your first stop in our lab will be our waiting room. Here you will meet the primary experimenter, and she will explain the experiment that your infant will be participating in and take you through the consent process. We have lots of toys to keep your child entertained during this time.

Once the study has been explained, you and your infant will move on to the testing room.

Habituation Studies

Habituation studies take place in our habituation room, which has a curtained booth with a high chair for your infant and a chair for you right beside it. At the front of the booth will be a small stage.

Two lab assistants will be helping with the study. One will be sitting outside the booth watching your infant’s face on a monitor and making a judgement about whether your infant is looking at the event.

Our other lab assistant will be performing several simple events in front of you at the stage. The first thing she will do will be to make some noise in front of your infant so that we can get a frame of reference for where he or she is looking.

Then, we will begin showing you and your infant some very simple events at the stage. Those events will change somewhat as we proceed through testing.

Problem Solving Studies
problemsolve

Problem solving studies take place in our table top testing room. This room is equipped with a high chair for your infant, a chair for you, a chair for the primary experimenter, and a table. The experimenter will administer some tasks to your infant that are very similar to playing simple games. Here an infant pulls a string to get a toy.

After testing is finished, the primary experimenter, parent, and infant head back to the waiting room to discuss what happened during testing and talk a little bit about the study. The parent is given parking validation, and the infant is allowed to pick out a gift toy at this time.
