Emergency Procedures


EEU Search Policies and Procedures
BUILDING SEARCH

1. Inform the switchboard, Principal and/or Assistant Principal immediately (ext. 100)

  • Give the following information: child's name, general physical description, what they were wearing, etc.

2. The Principal or Assistant Principal will coordinate the Building Search

3. Classroom staff and available EEU staff members conduct a search of the building:

  • LOOK UNDER AND IN ALL NOOKS AND CRANNIES (Any where a child could hide)
  • After checking each area within the building, LOCK THE DOOR to prevent the child from reentering unseen

**If the teacher is certain the child is out of the building, or if there are other pressing circumstances, a grounds search may be undertaken immediately

GROUNDS SEARCH

1. The Principal or Assistant Principal will determine if and when to conduct a Grounds Search

2. The switchboard will make an announcement over the intercom using a phrase "It's Time To Start Your Route" that will signal the staff that there is a need for a Grounds Search

  • When classroom staff hear the announcement, one staff member from each designated team or room should come directly to the office and pick up a map and a walkie talkie
  • Look at the child's picture (kept on the back of contact cards at the front desk)
  • Begin designated route (see map)

3. The switchboard will signal staff members on the walkie talkies if the child has been found

4. The Principal or Assistant Principal will determine if and when to notify the police

EEU Child Search Procedure

Emergency information for each child is filed alphabetically in the emergency information box in Room 116, the nurse's office and in each teacher's office.  Familiarize yourself with its location.  Staff emergency information can be obtained from the EEU receptionist.


Possible Life-Threatening Situation

In the case of what you perceive to be a possible life-threatening situation

1. BEGIN FIRST AID, INCLUDING CPR, IF NECESSARY.

2. CALL OR HAVE SOMEONE ELSE CALL 911. 

  • To call 911 from EEU, you must dial "9" first. 
  • Describe the nature of the emergency. 
  • Indicate whether the victim is a child or an adult. 
  • Give our location and your room number:
  • CHDD/EEU
    South on 15th past Pacific
    Left on Columbia Road
    Last building on right
    (the low, flat building behind the University Hospital, on the Ship Canal)

3. CALL THE SWITCHBOARD AND APPRISE THE OPERATOR THAT YOU HAVE CALLED 911. 

  • The switchboard operator should inform the:  Principal, Vice Principal, Director, and the School Administrative Assistant.

4. HAVE ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER PULL THE CHILD'S HEALTH RECORD (located in the nurse's desk in CD116). 

  • This person should post her/himself outside the door to direct emergency personnel to the victim.

5. ONE STAFF PERSON SHOULD ACCOMPANY OR FOLLOW THE VICTIM.  ANOTHER STAFF PERSON SHOULD CALL THE PARENTS, or in the case of injured staff, the emergency contact, and let them know where the victim is to be taken.


In the Case of Possible Poisoning
  1. Call poison control.  The phone number, 206-526-2121, is on the phone.
  2. They will want to know what the child ingested (bring the container or substance to the phone), the child's age and your estimate of his/her weight.
  3. The icepack is kept in your first aid box.  Activated charcoal is in the medicine chest in the nurse's office, CD116.  Do not give it until advised to do so by poison control.

In the Case of a Non-Life Threatening Situation
  1. BEGIN FIRST AID.
  2. ASK THE RECEPTIONIST TO LOCATE THE NURSE.
  3. HAVE ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER PULL THE CHILD OR STAFF PERSON'S EMERGENCY CARD.
  4. If the assessment is made that the child will need further care, have someone CALL THE OFFICE OF THE DOCTOR LISTED ON THE EMERGENCY CARD.  IF THE DOCTOR IS UNAVAILABLE CALL THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM FOR A CHILD, the University Hospital emergency room for an adult, or if the person is a Group Health member, the Group Health emergency room (the phone numbers are above).  Report the victim's name, your assessment of the situation and tell them that you are on your way.  The parents or emergency contact should then be called and asked to come to the doctor's office or emergency room.
  5. TAKE THE VICTIM, EMERGENCY CARD AND FILE CONTAINING EMERGENCY CONSENT, AND PROCEED TO THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE OR EMERGENCY ROOM.  There should be two staff people in the car, a driver and someone to attend to the victim.  A child below the age of four should always be transported in a car seat.  Everyone should be wearing seatbelts.

In the Case of a Dental Emergency

If the nurse is unavailable, ask the receptionist to page the Principal and the nurse.

  1. Call the parent immediately.
  2. Have the parent call the child's dentist and then take the child to that dentist.
  3. If the child does not have a dentist, call the dental clinic at Children's Hospital, 206-526-2243, to have the child seen in the clinic on an emergency basis.

School Illness Care Policy and Procedures

If the teacher thinks that a sick child might pose a health hazard to others, the teacher will ask the nurse to assess the child.  If a child is ill he or she will be removed from the classroom.  The child will rest in the nursing office and the parent will be asked to pick up the child from school.  If the nurse is unavailable, consult the illness exclusion policy for when a child needs to be excluded from school.


EARTHQUAKE

In the event of an earthquake:

  • Drop- if you are indoors, stay indoors.  Take shelter under a table or desk.  Seek cover against an interior wall, or in a doorway.
  • Cover- protect your head and neck with your arms.  Stay away from windows, movable equipment, and objects hanging on the wall.
  • Hold- if you take cover under furniture, hold onto the legs and be prepared to move with it

STAY UNDER COVER UNTIL THE SHAKING STOPS AND IT IS SAFE TO MOVE.

BE PREPARED FOR AFTERSHOCKS.

After an earthquake:

  • Assess injuries and damages in your area.
  • Report life-threatening damages and injuries to the principal and the nurse if possible.
  • Stay away from fallen or damaged electrical wires or powered items.
  • Wait for instructions from Jennifer, Zee or Jim Cornwall.
  • Designate someone to get your earthquake kit.
  • If there is a need to evacuate, please evacuate to the area just outside the gym, at the east end of the building.

FIRE

In the event of a fire:

IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE, OR A POTENTIAL SITUATION, FOLLOW THE EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:

  • If the area is safe to enter, RESCUE children, visitors, and/or staff from the immediate danger and call for help.
  • Activate the ALARM by pulling the nearest fire alarm pull station.
  • Call 9-911 to report the exact location of the fire.
  • CONTAIN the fire by closing all doors and windows in the area of the alarm.

EVACUATE as usual for fire drills and wait for instructions from your supervisor or from building staff.
