Step 2: Review the Attendance and Substitute Policy

Assistant Teachers are responsible for helping run the classroom with the Head teacher.  Regular attendance is imperative.   If you are not going to be in class, you need to let the EEU Principal (Jennifer Annable) AND your Head Teacher know as soon as possible.  Be sure you have your head teacher's home phone number and she/he has yours.

When you do need to miss work please take the following steps:

  1. Make a request for an absence to the head teacher in your classroom
  2. Make a request for an absence to the Principal: Jennifer Annable (annable@u.washington.edu)
  3. If you are a practicum student at the UW you also need to inform your practicum supervisor
  4. Email the following distribution list (eeu-assistants-aides@u.washington.edu) and ask other assistants, interns and classroom aides if they can sub for you.

If you are sick the day of your shift:  Call the front desk (206-543-4011) ASAP and leave a message informing the Head Teacher that you are sick.  Include the following information:

  1. Your first and last name
  2. The classroom (i.e., Room 135)
  3. The time of day you wok (8:45-11:00)

Step 3: Review the Role of the Assistant Teacher

All assistant teachers work in the classrooms part time (with the exception of the assistant teacher in ECEAP).  However, additional time is needed in order to fulfill the dual role.  The job of an assistant teacher is based on responsibility, not hours.  You will have certain student responsibilities that sometimes will take more than 20 hours per week (your employee responsibility).

Your job is to (1) learn how to be a teacher, (2) support the children, and (3) support the head teacher and classroom staff.  The compensation for your work is tuition exemption, a monthly stipend and the support and training from the EEU staff.

The Role of the Assistant Teacher is to work with the Head Teacher to provide leadership and support for the entire classroom team.  However, it is the Head Teacher with the related Service Staff providers who are ultimately responsible for decision making.  Hopefully in most cases, the team will be working together as a unit to make decisions collaboratively.

Please review the following document: Role of the Assistant Teacher

Step 4: Meet with your Head Teacher
All Assistant Teachers should meet with their Head Teachers to discuss specific expectations.

Step 5: Additional EEU Expectations

Planning

Assistant Teachers will take part in planning on a whole class, small group and inidvidual level.

  • Whole class: collaborating with teaching staff to determine themes, activities, materials and to develop the activity matrix for the classroom
  • Small group: developing activity plans for group activities and submitting these plans to the Head Teacher and Assistant Principal
  • Individual: developing specific instructional and/or behavior plans for students

Training

Assistant Teachers will help provide training to classroom aides and volunteers. This may include:

  • Orientation to the classroom
  • Tour of the building
  • Supporting individuals completing the Classroom Aide Checklist
  • Providing support and feedback

Step 6: Review some specific information about how to support children in the classroom

Interactions with children (IMAC)
Everyone should be doing one of four things when interacting with children in the classroom:

  1. Imitating the children (watching how the children use the blocks and doing the same thing)
  2. Modeling new actions (showing the children how to make a house with the blocks or using the blocks to make a road)
  3. Asking questions ("What color is that block?"  "How many blocks did you use?")
  4. Commenting on what the children are doing ("You are building a tall tower with those blocks.")

* Keys to success:

  • Get down on there level (both physically and conceptually)
    • Physically: play on the ground and try to be at eye level with the children
    • Conceptually: use direct, specific and age appropriate language – talk about things that are a part of the children's everyday experiences
  • Be animated – get excited about small things
  • Keep trying

Step 7: Review Child Abuse and Neglect Policies

EEU POLICY ON CHILD ABUSE and NEGLECT

In accordance with RCW 26-44.030, the EEU is required to report any and all suspected cases of abuse and neglect to Child Protective services within 48 hours (1-800-609-8767 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and 1-800-562-5624 after normal business hours, weekends and holidays).  All EEU professionals are obligated by law to report any suspected incidents of abuse or neglect.  Persons who fail to make a report on suspected abuse or neglect are subject to a citation for a misdemeanor.

In the event of any concerns regarding the possibility of physical, emotional, medical, or sexual abuse or neglect, the school nurse and/or the social worker document this information.  The EEU CPS committee (nurse, social worker, principal, admissions coordinator, and classroom staff) is convened immediately.  A report may be made to CPS.  This incident is documented in the child's social work folder.  Any staff member is free to report to CPS if he or she is in disagreement with the review committee.

The statement below is required by King County Division of Developmental Disabilities: Abuse, neglect, or exploitation of students by staff, volunteers, practicum students or others will be reported to Child Protective Services.  Additional sanctions may include expulsion from academic program, disciplinary action, or dismissal.

The State Division of Developmental Disabilities must be notified if a formal CPS report is made for a child eligible for birth to three services.  In these instances, reports will be made by phone to the King County Program Manager and the DSHS DDD Case Resource Manager.
