The what and where of the EH Library
Collection: The Environmental Health Library is a specialized collection of monographs, journals, technical reports including NIOSH and EPA documents, departmental theses, World Health Organization (WHO) publications, and conference proceedings. The collection is reflective of the multi-disciplinary nature of the department, covering areas such as air and water pollution, analytical chemistry, industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, public health, radiation technology, toxicology, ergonomics, food sanitation, workers' compensation and waste management. While the Environmental Health Library focuses on serving faculty, students and staff of the Department of Environmental Health , we also serve other departments in School of Public Health , as well as all University of Washington members and the public. We are in close contact and work with other libraries of similar interests, such as the UW Health Sciences Library , Region X Environmental Protection Agency Library , and Labor and Industries Library in Olympia.

North Wall
The EH Library receives approximately one hundred journals and newsletters which can be located in alphabetical order along the North Wall. With a few exceptions, major serials are kept about four years. Occasionally, when back issues are not found elsewhere on campus, they are kept in storage. Contact the librarian if you would like back issues that are not on the shelf.
The current issues of major journals are found in the new journal display rack in covers. These items do not circulate. The most recent issues of major newsletters are posted on the EH Library bulletin board.
Monographs (books), World Health Organization (WHO) publications; NIOSH publications are arranged by NIOSH number.
West Wall
Along the west wall shelves are conference proceedings, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) documents, and Reference Reserved materials. Reference Reserved includes dictionaries, phonebooks, faculty articles, and job searching information.
There are two Macintosh computers with internet access; one contains the computerized EH Library Catalog and Check Out System. The new acquisition shelf is above the computers. New acquisitions do not circulate until they are moved to the regular shelves.
You will find a sink, refrigerator and microwave for your
convenience.
South Wall
Along the south wall are Federal and Washington State government documents arranged by key word; student theses alphabetical by author; notebooks with faculty publications; educational and career materials; departmental self-studies; readings for EH courses; and our Reference section. Reference works include dictionaries, standard texts, manuals, handbooks, yearbooks, statistical sources, and "classics" such as Documentation of TLV's, Casarett and Doull's Toxicology; The Basic Science of Poisons, Encyclopedia of Occupational Health and Safety, and Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials . These items are for LIBRARY USE ONLY. Special permission can be granted from the librarian to check out these works for copying purposes. Please see the librarian or library staff first. Faculty make individual decisions on the circulation policies for their class reading materials.
Library Bulletin Boards Outside the library are two EH Library bulletin boards. One contains subscription and sample newsletters the library receives. The other bulletin board displays recent newspaper articles, conference and grant information, departmental information, and miscellaneous announcements and items of interest
