The DEH Library The Department of Environmental Health maintains a library collection reflecting the multidisciplinary and dynamic nature of current research interests and course offerings within the department. The collection consists of over 3,500 cataloged materials including: toxicology and occupational health and safety reference works and standards, cd-roms, monographs, technical reports, student theses, NIOSH, EPA, and other government documents, conference proceedings, and over 100 journal and newsletter titles. See the online tour for more about the DEH library collection.
Most of the library collection is available for circulation. There is an online catalog , enabling subject, title, author, and keyword access to the library's holdings. The self-service check-out system is connected to the catalog. The library's two computer workstations provide internet access. Through the internet, the UW Libraries' catalogs are accessible, along with many licensed bibliographic databases, such as Toxline, Medline, Current Contents, and Agricola. These databases are generally restricted to UW access.
The Environmental Health librarian works closely with other libraries of similar interests such as the UW Health Sciences Library and Information Center, the Washington State Labor and Industries Library, the Region X Environmental Protection Agency Library , and the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP) Library. In addition to the "main library" housed in the Health Sciences Building, there is a small reference collection located with the Field Research and Consultation Group (Roosevelt Building). A separate online catalog provides access to that collection.
A part-time librarian and staff are available to assist with reference questions, library research methods, literature searching, and general information needs for members of the Department, as well as the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. The Environmental Health Library also serves affiliates of the University of Washington, government agencies, and the public.
The DEH Library is located in the Health Sciences Building in Room F453,
Box # 357234. The librarian has an office in E069G, and
can be reached by phone at 685-2892, or by email(ehlib@u.washington.edu). See the written directions and
graphical maps to the library for complete
directions.
The library is open from approximately 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The library
is reserved daily from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM as a 'Lunch and Conference
Room'. The library can be reserved for meetings by calling the library
office and signing up outside the door of the library. The EH Library has a simple-to-use,
computerized catalog on Hypercard®. You can use a "find" command
to put in any title, author, subject heading or keyword you are looking
for, including phrases and multiple word/concept searches. Be as specific
as possible. Searching on a general term such as industrial hygiene
will probably yield many more items than you need or want. The
catalog will also report if and when a work is checked out. Loan periods
are 2 weeks and renewable by request. If you have an immediate need for a
work that is checked out, please contact the librarian and she will recall
the item. The EH Library catalog is available through the EH Library terminal,
the DEH server Kanga, and through the librarian. As the EH Library is a
departmental library and is NOT an official UW Library, its catalog is NOT
part of the official UW catalog, nor is it currently available on the Web.
See the
detailed instructions on how to use the catalog or
the brief, pictorial instructions.
The daily Seattle P.I. (a.m.) and the New York Times are
available in the library. Please do not remove them from the library
room. The
librarian and staff will address any reference questions you might have,
such as: "Where can I find information on...?", "How do I use this index
or online database?", "Can I find this information on the Web?", "What is
the best source for...?", "What is the standard citation format for my
thesis?", "How can I get works not available on campus?", "Where do I
begin???". We can also assist with locating the actual information,
interlibrary loan requests, citation confirmations for purchasing or
publication, creating bibliographies, etc. Please feel free to
contact the librarian with your questions. If
you have questions, comments, ideas, or purchasing suggestions for the
librarian, please email
ehlib@u.washington.edu or
call (206) 685-2892. Depending on your specialty, many other campus branch
libraries will be of great use to you. The most commonly used UW Libraries for the needs of
the Environmental Health Department are the Health Sciences Library, the
Engineering Library, the Chemistry Library, the Forestry Library, the
Government Publications Library (in the Suzzallo library), and the
Suzzallo Graduate Library.
