Writing format for writing assignments, field trip reports and make-up assignments:

1-2 pages, double spaced, size 11 ‘Times’ font (unless you don’t have this font)

Writing Assignment 1: Due in class Friday October 10th

Based on the readings Katz (1991) and Zentner (1992) for this week..

Write a philosophical criticism of ecological restoration? (why you think restoration does not work or does not restore natural systems.) And, explain how Zentner would respond to your statement?

Your paper can be structured however you like. It could be a discussion between you and Zentner, it could be presented as a publication by you followed by the article “Zentner on <your name>”, or another format. Just make sure it is coherent, with perfect grammar and enjoyable to read.

Magnuson Field Trip Assignment: Due Oct. 17 at beginning of lecture.

From what you know about the past efforts and future plans for ecological restoration at Magnuson park, do you consider it a success? Success may be measured by ecosystem processes/goods, habitat restoration/creation, esthetic quality, etc.. Why or why not? Utilize your visit to the park, the project description viewable online, or any other resources.

~2 pages, double spaced, size 11 Times font.

Meadowbrook Field Trip Assignment: Due Oct. 24 at beginning of lecture.

Compare and contrast Whisenant's restoration methodology/approach (outlined in Chapter 1 of "Repairing Damaged Systems") with the restoration project done at Meadowbrook Pond.

Another way to answer this question is.. in which ways would Steven Whisenant agree and/or disagree with the work done by Seattle Public Utilities at Meadowbrook Pond. (The designers and contractors were independent but consider them all under the guidance of Seattle Public Utilities.)

Considerations (not requirements):

Lab Assignment 1: Will be handed out and completed in lab

Out Of Site: Postcard Activity: Bring postcard to Lab on December 4

Problem: Go to the site where you last participated in restoration, prepare a postcard describing your experience.

Purpose: Use the postcard exercise as a vehicle to communicate a sense of place. Combine text and images using observations and/or feelings about the restoration activities that you participated. Text and imagery that reflect your experience of the place. The postcard can also act as documentation, expression or memory of the people/wildlife who interact with the site.

Media: Found, altered and/or fabricated 2-D image (e.g. photo, collage, drawing) including text

Presentation Format: Standard postcard

EXAMPLE POSTCARD ACTIVITY:

Magnuson Off-Leash Dog Park

Front of the postcard: composed photograph of an object on-site that illustrates the mood of the landscape Back of the postcard: typed text referring to the place name of the site accompanied by a handwritten letter describing what activities take place at the site
