Executive
MBA 20th Year Celebration and All Class Reunion
The EMBA Program held a 20 Year Celebration and All Class Reunion
on Thursday, May 19 at the Washington Athletic Club (Crystal
Ballroom). The approximately 200 attendees included alumnae
from most classes and 17 faculty as well as current and former
program staff. Louise Kapustka (Director) and
Jan Monti (Former EMBA Director) emceed the
event which included sharing EMBA memories (several storyboards
were displayed throughout the room) and recognizing Bill
Alberts, Kasi Ramanathan and Jan
Monti for their contribution to the EMBA Program. The
event was a huge success. View
the pictures from the event.
Watch
for Business
(the B-School Magazine) this Fall! The magazine will feature
the EMBA 20th Year Celebration and Reunion and profile two EMBA
alums – Charlie Robbins, Sea to Ski (NA-5
Class, 2004) and Trung Tran, Weyerhaeuser (Regional-21
Class, 2005).
Curriculum
Highlight – CEO and the Board
Richard
(Dick) P. Cooley, President/CEO (Retired) has been
teaching the “CEO and the Board” course to the Executive
MBA Second Year Students for the past 5 years. His course highlights
the roles and myriad responsibilities of a CEO and the Board
and stresses the importance of community involvement. Dick invites
prominent business and community leaders to share their leadership
expertise and respond to student's questions. Dick’s 2004/5
speakers included: Renee Behnke, Jeff
Brotman, Phyllis Campbell, Joan
Enticknap, Dan Evans, Anne
Farrell, Mike Garvey, Joanne
Harrell, Kerry Killinger, John
Nordstrom and Mark Pigott.
Second
Annual Business Plan Competition
Our second annual Business Plan Competition was held on Friday,
June 3. The all-day event was the culmination of the Corporate
Entrepreneurship class and involved all (14) Regional 21 and
North America 6 Study Groups presenting business plans to a
panel of 30 judges from Venture Capital, Fortune 500 firms and
also UW Business School faculty. The Gold Study Group from Regional
21 won first place in the Business Plan Competition -- the project/business
idea came from our EMBA alum Douglas Lee (1996).
June
2005 Graduation
82
students in Regional Class 21 and North America Class 6 graduated
on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at Benoroya Hall. The convocation
speaker was Robert Herbold, Retired Executive,
Vice President and COO, Microsoft Corporation. Our new Dean,
Jim Jiambalvo, welcomed friends and families
of graduates. Associate Dean Gary Sundem, was
Master of Ceremonies. Regional Class 21 Emcee Keith
Arnzen presented Excellence in Teaching Awards to Bob
Bowen and Karma Hadjimichalakis. North
America Class 6 Emcee Rob Ziegler presented
the awards to Bob Bowen and Charles Hill.
Belina
Makonnen receives Outstanding B-School Staff Award!
Our very own Belina Makonnen was selected to
receive a 2005 Outstanding Business School Staff Award! Belina
was recognized for her: long-term (almost 20 years!) dedication
to the EMBA Program; cross-university outreach; diversity initiatives;
growing Alumni relations and, most importantly, role in establishing
the UW EMBA culture.
The
chorus of contributors to Belina's well-deserved recognition
included: EMBA faculty (Bob Bowen, Vern Buck,
Karma Hadjimichalakis, Rocky Higgins and Larry
Schall); alumni (Marla Miller); as
well as B-School and program staff (Louise Kapustka, Jan Monti,
Michael Verchot and Bronica Wan).
2006
International Study Seminar
Following a very successful March 2005 trip, our 2006 International
Study Seminar will take place again in Beijing/Shanghai, China
in mid-March 2006. We expect 35-40 students will take the
optional trip. Professor Shuping Chen will
once again accompany the students, Louise Kapustka and Belina
Makonnen. We’re hoping to schedule company visits to Cutter
& Buck, Coca Cola, Shanghai Automotive, and Baosteel. We
would appreciate receiving any business contacts you may have
with these organizations.
Recruiting
EMBA
alums are our best referral source for new students. In September,
the Program office will send each of you an Alumni Recruiting
Kit and new “Guide
to the Executive MBA Program”.
Watch
for our new, combined and downloadable EMBA Program catalogue
(available on our Web site in September). A very special thank
you to 2005 grads, sponsors, other profiled alumni and faculty
who helped us tell a really compelling UW EMBA story: Scott
Carson (1985), Phyllis Campbell (1987), Mic
Dinsmore (1999), Ken Hey (2000), Jeff
Foster (2004), Stefan J. M. Kraemer
(2004), Kathryn Villeneuve (2004), 2005 NA-6
Orange Group (Greg Haas, Brian Johnson,
Sol Lipman, Joel Westvold,
Chris Wolff, Beverly Wyse,
Del M. Wilson), 2005 Regional 21 Red Group
(Andrew Zanelli, Kelley Dobbs,
Victoria Hagen, Viral Saraiya,
Jerry Hardt, Steve Harper),
Michael Bletko (2005), Don Rohacek
(2005), David Still, Weyerhaeuser Building
Materials, Richard P. (Dick) Cooley and Charles Hill.
Please
pass along Program information and/or encourage colleagues or
friends to attend an upcoming Information
Reception or Road Show.
We
appreciate your continued support!
