Dispelling Myths by Promoting the Facts
Myths and misunderstandings abound in the field of augmentative communication.
They are terribly detrimental because they incline us to make assumptions
about individuals or the solutions they need. When we act upon those
assumptions (or fail to act because of those assumptions)
we may prevent the individual from reaching his/her full potential.
Stereotypes about people who use AAC are wrong. There is as much diversity
among the people who use AAC as there is within any population of people.
Meet some people who demonstrate this diversity and remind us that AAC
users are PEOPLE first.
There are many rumors about "pre-requisites" for AAC or how
intervention strategies are determined by the individuals diagnosis,
but don't be fooled by them. Intervention is not determined by a formula
because the people who use AAC are so diverse. Challenge your notions
of intervention with these stories.
AAC is NOT just technology. Too often professionals and
families focus on equipment, perhaps even on a single device. Yet people
who use AAC successfully use a constellation of communication tools
and strategies, including high, low and no tech approaches. Meet people
who demonstrate or talk about what AAC really is to them.
AAC is NOT just for wants and needs, and certainly not just
for school or therapy. Just like speakers, individuals who use AAC have
so many other reasons to communicate! Hear some stories that demonstrate
the breadth of functional activities that comprise alternative communication.
There are so many myths that we have not addressed yet.
Here is a list of myths that we hope to dispel in the future.
