Promoting the Facts about AT Strategies and Tools

Many people, whether allied health professionals or family members, believe that AT means technology and that every problem has a technological solution. Individuals with disabilities know better. Here are a few truths about Assistive Technology.

[AT need not be complex to be valuable]

Sometimes, low-tech solutions are the best ones to meet the needs of individuals.

[AT does not replace personal assistants]

"For a person with a disability, a personal assistant can make the difference between living in the community or being institutionalized." World Institute on Disability (website, 2002).

[Solutions are not determined by impairment]

Diversity is the rule among individuals who use AT, even people who have the same underlying impairment or functional limitation. AT solutions, whether high or low tech, are very specific to the individual, the activity engaged in and the context for that activity.

[AT solutions can improve life for everyone]

Many inventions originally created using universal principles were made for people with disabilities, but that doesn't mean these tools aren't useful to a wide range of users.
