AT does not replace personal
assistants
Personal assistants may faciliate independence:
Alan and Sharon King can live independently in the community in part
through the help of personal assistants.
Peer helpers at school:
Sometimes a help from a classmate is especially meaningful and satisfying.
Here is a clip of elementary school students picking out books at the
library. Ashley uses eye-gaze for yes/no to indicate whether she wants
to check out a particular book.
Interpreter service may enhance technology:
Scott uses a voice output communication device for most of his interactions.
There are times when he also chooses to use the Speech-to-Speech
Relay Service to interpret his voice output for unfamiliar listeners.
Here is a video clip of him using an interpreter when calling a video
store.
These are just a sampling of examples that show the diversity
of possible AT solutions. Come back to find more examples as this
web site grows.
