Profiling Alan R. King
Alan is a very resourceful man, who has implemented creative solutions
to provide himself the independence he needs as a multi-media artist.
Alan, who lives in Washington State, uses both high and low-tech strategies
to meet his needs. For voice-output communication, he uses a Liberator
from PRC, for
mobility a power wheelchair, operating both with an adapted footpad.
He also uses an alphabet board by pointing with his foot. Alan has invented
several low-tech solutions for himself, including a unique front door
control mechanism, a way to paint with his foot, and away to sign documents
with a pen in his shoelace.
Alan's artistry manifests itself in many ways. He is a multi-media visual
artist of both commissioned and non-commisioned artwork (See the photo
gallery). He also sings in the greater Seattle area using his Liberator.
He was an Artist in Residence for many years with Artists Unlimited. In
that capacity, he met with elementary school children to show them how
to make art with their feet, as he does.
Alan is also an advocate for people with disabilities. He has been
trained in ADA
law and is using that knowledge to help guide his church's building
committee to meet ADA requirements. In this video clip, Alan is shown
testifying at a hearing at DSHS
against a proposal to change the funding rules for AAC devices.
