Our laboratory was started in 1993 in the Department of Anthropology at the Pennsylvania State University, by Dr. James W. Wood.

Together with Dr. Wood, several other individuals were instrumental in getting the lab up and running: Dr. Kenneth Campbell, Dr. Cheryl Stroud, Darryl Holman, and Ellie Brindle. Dr. O'Connor joined the Penn State Lab as an National Institutes on Aging postdoctoral fellow in 1995.

From 1995 to 1999 there were many members who made valuable contributions to the lab. Many of the photos on the Photo Album page are of these people from the Penn State Lab.

In 1999 the laboratory moved to the University of Washington, with Dr. Holman and Dr. O'Connor.

In 2002, the biodemography laboratory joined the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology (CSDE) as the Biodemography Core and is funded in part by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) R24 Center Grant.
