Information Session: Thursday, January 24 at 4pm in Savery Hall, room 132.
The Globe Theatre, London
For over 400 years London has been the most important center for theatre in the English-speaking world, especially so for the production of Shakespeare’s plays. During our four week program we will read and see five productions of his plays on stage. What we will see depends on what’s on when we get there, but we will see two productions at the Globe Theatre in London, at least one in the newly remodeled Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford upon Avon, and the rest in London’s West End.
Professor W.R. Streitberger
taught by Professor W.R. Streitberger, UW English Department Faculty
London and Stratford are our principal classrooms. Much of our time will be spent out on the town, seeing plays, taking backstage tours, walking the theatre districts and other sites in London and Stratford and imaginatively recreating them.
Requirements—a genuine interest in/curiosity about Shakespeare, an illustrated
theatre notebook which includes essays on the plays we see and the sites we
visit, and a concluding exam (format: multiple choice, short response).
Students in the program will maintain their UW residency and any financial aid eligibility already established. Credits earned will be recorded on students' UW transcripts and apply directly to UW graduation requirements.
Housing and board for students will be arranged with families in London.
Program fee: $3,000. This fee includes housing, most food (breakfast and dinner are provided daily.) The program fee also covers the costs of all transport in central London, RT rail travel to Stratford upon Avon, overnight Bed & Breakfast, and all theater tickets and site admissions.
