My research falls into two broad areas. I have been investigating the natural history of asbestos-related lung disease. The CARET which studied the symptoms and lung function of asbestos-exposed men provides an excellent opportunity to investigate questions such as whether fibrosis is a prerequisite for lung cancer or whether beta carotene and vitamin a intake results in preservation of lung function. Through another grant we are embarking on a study of how to control silica exposures and silicosis in developing nations. A second area of investigation is how a public health approach can be used to reduce occupational hazards on Department of Energy Sites. This includes system design, implementation, and investigations and validation of screening tests utilizing new biomarkers.
