Gwy-Am Shin, PhD, MS

Assistant Professor, Env. and Occ. Health Sciences

Dr.Shin is an Assistant Professor whose research areas include environmental health microbiology (water microbiology); removal/inactivation of waterborne microorganisms by water and wastewater treatment processes (both physico-chemical and disinfection processes); and development of proper methods (including molecular biological methods).

Projects

The primary focus of my research is studying the effects of water and wastewater treatment processes on various waterborne microorganisms. Currently I am conducting several research projects evaluating the effectiveness of UV and chemical disinfectants for inactivation of viruses, bacteria, protozoan parasites, and emerging pathogens in drinking water, wastewater and recreational water, and developing a clearer understanding of the mechanism of UV and chlorine inactivation of these waterborne pathogens.
