Keifer given Community Volunteer Recognition Award

Keifer receives award

Dr. Matt Keifer, Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, received a Community Volunteer Recognition Award at the January 15 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute, jointly sponsored by Health Sciences Administration and UW Medical Center.

Since his earliest years as a physician working in public health in Nicaragua, Dr. Matthew Keifer has been a leading voice for and a highly effective innovator of projects for improving the lives of underserved and at-risk groups. His work has focused on some of the most adverse circumstances faced by individuals: working in hazardous situations and with hazardous materials.

In his research, teaching, professional and personal activities, he has demonstrated commitment and achievement in addressing community needs and has developed programs aimed at better understanding and managing occupational risks and community health risks, in Washington state, Latin America and Southeast Asia. His volunteer work as an attending physician in the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic for more than 12 years, and his leadership in helping the School of Public Health and Community Medicine devise and successfully implement summer training opportunities for undergraduates from under-represented groups are also examples of his wholehearted efforts to protect and empower individuals, while making a huge difference in the lives of disadvantaged groups both locally and globally.
