Academic Degree Programs
Occupational & Environmental Medicine
Training & Academic Programs
The program offers an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited two-year residency/fellowship in Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM), leading to Occupational Medicine Board eligibility. Ideal candidates for this fellowship have completed training in a primary clinical specialty and are interested in applying their clinical knowledge in a way that can prevent occupational and environmental illnesses and injuries.
In addition to clinical training in Occupational Medicine, trainees in the OEM training program also obtain a Master of Public Health in OEM. The OEM MPH degree program provides trainees with a sound didactic background in the principles of occupational and environmental medicine while simultaneously providing academic training in epidemiology, toxicology, biostatistics, and health services administration. The Occupational & Environmental Medicine MPH program is geared towards clinicians.
For more detail on curriculum, course requirements, and typical schedules in the academic program, see Master of Public Health Academic Program.
UW Residency/Fellowship
Our clinical activities are conducted at Harborview Medical Center, one of the University of Washington's two main teaching hospitals. Trainees hold joint appointments in the accredited residency program as senior fellows in the Department of Medicine and the School of Public Health. In addition, a joint training program with the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is offered.
The program's clinical component centers on regularly scheduled diagnostic and surveillance outpatient clinics conducted at Harborview Medical Center. The multidisciplinary staff, including attending physicians, an industrial hygienist, enrolled fellows and residents, evaluates approximately 1,500 patients yearly. Additional clinical opportunities are available in specialty clinics including pulmonary, dermatology, otorhinolaryngology, sports and spine, orthopedic, chest, and the pain clinic. Offsite rotations are arranged with a number of local and regional organizations, including The Boeing Company, the Department of Labor and Industries, Group Health, Valley Medical Center, Washington Poison Control Center, Central Washington Occupational Medicine Clinic, the Work Clinic, and the Veteran Affairs (VA) Puget Sound.
