Admission is competitive for our programs. Applicants must meet both the requirements
of the University of Washington Graduate School and the requirements of
the department. Please see the prerequisites specific to the program that
you are applying to: MS programs, MPH
program in Environmental and Occupational Health, MPH
program in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, or PhD
programs.
MS Program Prerequisites and Minimum Requirements |
Degree |
Baccalaureate
degree in science or engineering*, with coursework in the areas
specified below.
*Applicants
with non-science majors may also be considered if the prerequisite
course requirements have been satisfied. |
Coursework* |
Physics:
One year of physics, covering mechanics, electromagnetism, oscillatory
motion, and waves.
Chemistry:
One year of general chemistry and two quarters (one semester) of
organic chemistry. One quarter of physical chemistry or quantitative
chemistry is desirable.
Mathematics:
One quarter of differential and integral calculus. Additional calculus
is desirable.
Biology:
One year of biology.

GPA |
The University of Washington Graduate School requires a minimum GPA
of 3.0 for at the last two years (90 credits) of study. Exceptionally
strong applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may still be considered. |
GRE |
Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) scores of 1,000 (sum of verbal and quantitative
raw scores) are required.* No specific subject area tests are required.

TOEFL |
International Students and Permanent Residents
Only. Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores of 580 (237 computer
or 70 iBT) or above.* The test must be taken within two years of
the date that the applicant will begin the program.

MPH
in Occupational and Environmental Medicine
Prerequisites and Minimum Requirements |
Degree |
An MD, DO, or PhD degree is required for admission to MPH in Occupational
and Environmental Medicine program. Applicants should also have
prior coursework in the following areas: |
Coursework* |
Physics:
One year of physics, covering mechanics, electromagnetism, oscillatory
motion, and waves.
Chemistry:
A minimum of two years of chemistry, including courses in general
and organic chemistry. Additional chemistry courses, such as physical
chemistry, biochemistry, and/or quantitative analysis are highly
recommended.
Mathematics:
Calculus, including differential and integral calculus. A course
in general statistics is strongly recommended.
Biology:
One year of general biology. At least one additional advanced biology
course, such as molecular biology, genetics, mammalian and/or cell
physiology, vertebrate anatomy or histology is highly recommended.

Graduation from a Class A medical school (United States, Canada, or equivalent) |

Completion of one year of approved internship; three years training in primary
care specialty is encouraged. |
Applicants
to this residency program should first contact the residency program
coordinator.
Do not apply to the MPH program in Occupational and Environmental
Medicine until advised to do so by the residency program coordinator.
