What is Graduate Nonmatriculated Status?
Graduate Nonmatriculated (GNM) is a classification for students who already have a bachelor's degree and are not currently seeking a graduate degree, but who may later want to apply the credits toward a graduate degree. GNM students may apply a maximum of 12 graduate-level credits toward degree requirements should they later be accepted into a graduate program. It is important to note that acceptance as a GNM student does not imply admission to a graduate degree program.
A minimum grade-point-average of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter (60 semester) graded credits is required for consideration.GNM status is not available to persons who will be holding F-1 visas. Financial support is not available to GNM students.
Please see the UW Non-Degree Enrollment site for additional information on Graduate Nonmatriculated Status.
Application Deadlines
Autumn Quarter - September 1
Winter Quarter - December 1
Spring Quarter - March 1
Summer Quarter - May 15
To expedite processing, we recommend that you submit your application several weeks before the deadline for the quarter to which you are applying.
Prerequisites
An additional factor that will be considered in reviewing your application is whether you have sufficient preparation in the prerequisites listed below. An application will still be considered if it is deficient in one or more of these areas, but a strong foundation in math and science is important for success in many of our courses. We will examine transcripts for the following:
- Physics: One year of physics, covering mechanics, electromagnetism, oscillatory motion, and waves.
- Chemistry: One year of general chemistry and two quarters (one semester) of organic chemistry. One quarter of physical chemistry or quantitative chemistry is desirable.
- Mathematics: One quarter of differential and integral calculus.
- Biology: One year of biology.
If you do not have this background, please note which courses you plan to take as a GNM student so that can ensure that you have the preparation required for those courses.

Registration Information
Because GNM students are special access students, registration is done through UW Extension. Once your application is approved, the Office of Graduate Admissions will communicate the admissions decision and registration information to you by email. Registration instructions and forms are available at: http://www.extension.washington.edu/nondegree/register/
Staff Tuition Exemption Students: GNM students who are using UW employee tuition exemption are eligible to register on the 3rd day of the quarter using the MyUW registration system. You will still receive an email confirming the decision on your GNM application, but you will not need to register through the UW Extension Office.
