Student Research HighlightsA Commitment to Our Students

The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences believes in supporting its graduate students in all aspects of their educational and professional lives. Some examples:

Student Involvement

Student representatives participate in faculty meetings, curriculum committee meetings, and admission committee meetings. The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) provides another mechanism for student thoughts and needs to be heard. In addition to its advisory function, SAC sponsors educational activities such as fall quarter's Research Roundtable, which provides new students advice on selecting a preceptor and a research project, and social activities such as the orientation week barbecue for new students.

Preparation for Professional Careers

Individual mentoring is provided by the student's committee chair, who can provide a variety of resources such as information about the current job market, financial assistance to attend professional meetings, and professional contacts. The Graduate Program Office sponsors several activities during the year to help students make the transition from student to professional life.

Career Day: Offered each May, Career Day provides an opportunity to build relationships in the business community. The Graduate Program Office invites public health leaders from industry, consulting, governmental agencies, and advocacy groups to meet our students over lunch to discuss career trends and prospects, and describe what they look for in graduates. Please see Previous Career Day Participants for more information.

Student Research Day: This annual event in late spring provides graduating students an opportunity to present their research to fellow students, staff, faculty, and the wider community. The event is structured in a mini-conference format with presentations from select students followed by a poster session. More information about student research can be found on:

Student Technology Support

The Department supports two computer labs, one on our main campus and one at the Roosevelt site. Each lab has ten computers with statistical and graphics software, printers, scanners, and CD burners. In addition, the department provides laptop computers, LCD projectors, and digital video cameras for student checkout. This equipment was partially funded by a UW Student Technology Fee grant. The grant proposal was a collaborative effort between the Graduate Program Office and the students in the program. Technology needs are frequently evaluated through student surveys and informal feedback.

Financial Support

Because we realize that graduate school is demanding, we do our best to provide financial support to almost all of the students in our master's and doctoral programs. We want students to be able to concentrate their time and energies on course work and research so that they can excel and gain the maximum benefit from their experience at the University of Washington. For more information on available support and current funding levels, please see the page on Graduate Student Funding.
