Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is a serious consequence of exposure to high noise levels (levels above 85 decibels, A-weighted) (Suter, 2002). The National Institutes of Health estimate that one-third of all hearing loss is attributable to noise exposure (NIH 1990), and that occupational hearing loss is the most common cause of NIHL. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates that over 30 million workers in the U.S. must deal with occupational expousures to hazardous noise (NIOHS, 1996-a).
