Research

Prior to enrolling in the MPH program at the UW, Janessa served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of the Fiji Islands. Her previous research experience includes ecology and environmental biology, with a strong focus on microorganisms and environmental change. Her interest in the environment and the dental and health sciences made the MPH in Environmental and Occupational Health an ideal choice for Janessa, with its diverse curriculum and opportunities to specialize.

As a graduate student at the UW, Janessa has worked closely with researchers as the Evans School of Public Affairs on behavioral economics and decision-making in rural communities in Mexico. Currently, she is the Research Coordinator for the Pacific Islands Early Childhood Caries Prevention Project team in the Department of Dental Public Health in the (UW School of Dentistry). Additionally, Janessa is researching the impact of groundwater quality on children’s dental health in San Juan County, Washington.
