Research
After receiving his MS in Environmental Health from UW in 1998, Rick joined the staff of the UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences as a Research Scientist. His work from 1998-2005 primarily involved field-based assessments of occupational and non-occupational exposures to noise among workers in a variety of industries, including construction, forestry, and fishing He has also participated in a number of studies, including a longitudinal evaluation of the early development of noise-induced hearing loss, an intervention study designed to evaluate strategies to promote use of hearing protection among noise-exposed workers, an assessment of the effectiveness of different types of hearing protection, a survey of noise levels in New York City subways, an evaluation of fall hazards and safety climate in aircraft maintenance operations, a study of hand-arm and whole-body vibration in forestry workers, and a review of crane safety issues. For his dissertation, Rick hopes to improve on existing noise exposure assessment techniques by developing and evaluating the performance of a self-report questionnaire that will allow workers to estimate their own exposures to noise as an alternative or complementary approach to direct measurements of exposure.
