| Nicola Beck is a research scientist and lab manager in the Environmental and Occupational Health Microbiology Lab. Her long-standing interest is in the detection, surveillance and prevention of waterborne, foodborne, and zoonotic disease. Nicola has a strong background in public health microbiology and is very familiar with the transmission, survival, and persistence of environmental pathogens. She has experience in environmental sampling for viral and bacterial pathogens, genotypic and phenotypic microbial characterization, microbial disinfection, and microbial source tracking. |

| Ultraviolet irradiation has recently gained considerable attention as an alternative to conventional chemical disinfectants in water treatment processes after recent discovery of its remarkable inactivation ability against the highly chlorine-resistant protozoan pathogens. |
