Mandatory Public Reporting: Build it and who will come?

In response to public concerns prompted by the Institute of Medicine’s widely read report on medical error and maintained by campaigns from the Consumers Union, a growing number of states have legislated mandatory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates.  Washington’s state legislature passed its bill in 2007.  This presentation describes our evolving Washington State Health Department program, its alignment with continuous quality improvement, and provides critical appraisal of important recognized assumptions underlying mandatory public reporting.  It provides an opportunity for potential evaluation research partners to consider becoming engaged in the refinement of our developing program.
