Abstract:

Epidemiology is typically defined as the core science of public health. Epidemiology can also be instrumental in understanding basic biology - a funtion of epidemiology that is less widely appreciated. The tools and logic of epidemiology can shed light on human physiology in ways that laboratory science alone cannot. Examples will be provided from reproductive epidemiology.

About the Speaker:

Allen Wilcox has worked since 1979 as an investigator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, NIH, in Durham, North Carolina. His research interests are in fertility, pregnancy, and perinatal health. He is the author of a textbook (Fertility and Pregnancy - An Epidemiologic Perspective) published by Oxford University Press in 2010. Since 2001 he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal EPIDEMIOLOGY. He holds an MD from the University of Michigan, a PhD from the University of North Carolina, and an honorary PhD from the University of Bergen (Norway).
