Dear Prospective Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in the graduate programs in the Department
of Epidemiology at the University of Washington. Our department is one of the most highly regarded epidemiology
programs in the U.S. We offer tracks leading to the MPH, MS and
PhD degrees, each of which has a strong research emphasis. Our
strengths include:
- Our School of Public Health is consistently ranked among
the top six by U.S. News and World Report.
- We offer rigorous training in epidemiologic methods and
numerous electives in advanced methods, specific diseases and
specific exposures, taught by faculty members who are national and international leaders in their research fields, and who have have won school-wide,
university-wide and national awards for their teaching.
- We have a large (70) and productive faculty. The wide
range of faculty interest areas and affiliations leads to numerous
research opportunities for students in many areas of human health
and disease, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, injuries,
maternal and child health, reproductive health, neurological diseases,
diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions, and infectious diseases (primarily
HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases). Nutritional,
genetic, molecular, metabolic, environmental, medical, psychosocial,
socio-economic and behavioral factors associated with disease risk
and disease outcome are also under study. The faculty’s research
is highly interdisciplinary and often is conducted in collaboration
with outside institutions, as well as with many departments within
the University.
- Our students take advantage of the strong affiliations with Public Health: Seattle
and King County, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and
Group Health Research Institute (the largest staff-model health maintenance
organization in the Northwest), as well as the University of
Washington School of Medicine, VA Puget Sounds Health Care Systems, and Seattle Children's to name a few.
- The University is one of the top five schools in the nation
in the amount of federal research grants awarded.
We look forward to your application to our program. You can expect
an excellent and thorough grounding in epidemiological methods
in an atmosphere of collegiality with some of the best-known faculty
and brightest students in the country.
Sincerely,
Stephen M. Schwartz, PhD
