Research Interests
Studies of aging and chronic diseases; cardiovascular disease and its risk factors; physical and cognitive functioning in the elderly, dementia including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, health aging, and alternative and complementary approaches to health; chronic disease in developing countries.

Education
PhD, Epidemiology, University of Washington 1999
MA, Zoology, Southern Illinois University 1981
BS, Biology, Loyola University (Chicago) 1975

Projects
The Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) Coordinating Center (N01 HC85079) funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Role: Co-Investigator, prior Program Director. The Coordinating Center has organized the CHS Field Centers in this prospective study that is investigating risk factors for coronary heart disease and stroke in the elderly (ages 65-84).

The Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory (GEM ) Study (U01 AT00162) funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Role: Co-Investigator, Program Director. The coordinating center for this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial coordinates all aspects of data collection, management, and analysis for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-site prevention trial to determine the efficacy of Ginkgo biloba in delaying or preventing the onset of dementia in older adults.

The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Coordinating Center (N01 HC95159) funded by the National Health, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Role: Co-Investigator. This is a national study to identify risk factors for sub-clinical CVD and to explore the transition from sub-clinical to overt CVD, in a cohort of 6,800 participants age 45-84 of Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic and Chinese ethnicity.

Telomeres and Biologic Aging funded by a UW Royalty Research Award. Role: Principal Investigator. This is a locally funded project to investigate the role of telomeres, the ends of chromosomes that reduce in length with each cell replication, and which may be modified by the presence of certain diseases, in the prediction of mortality in the elderly using blood samples from the Cardiovascular Health Study cohort.

The Cardiovascular Health Intervention Research Network is a collaboration of six universities funded by the Centers for Disease Control (1 U48 DP000312-01) to study CVD in underserved populations. Studies resulting from this grant have included use of Photovoice in assessing perceptions of cardiovascular health in Asian immigrants, displaying posters in Seattle buses to promote stroke awareness, and production to a radio novella in Spanish to increase awareness of stroke signs and symptoms.

The Nepal Heart Health Study is a collaboration between the UW, Harvard University and the Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center in Kathmandu to develop a protocol and collect data on prevalence and risk factors for heart disease and stroke in Nepal. The project was funded by the UW Royalty Research Fund and Dr. Fitzpatrick is PI.
