My mission is to transform the lives of families through high quality training and research.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi in 1989 I worked for 1 year as a medical officer intern in a provincial hospital then for 2 years as a medical officer in charge of a 20 bed rural hospital serving the central part of Kenya. In 1996 I completed my speciality training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Nairobi and in 2001 did my Master of Public Health (Epidemiology) in the University of Washington
I have been a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology and honorary lecturer from 1996 and was the head of the department from 2005 to 2009. In 2010 I joined the University of Nairobi as a senior lecturer and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. I have supervised thesis writing for 22 postgraduate students, 3 Postgraduate Diploma, 12 Master of Medicine (MMed), 5 Master of Public Health (MPH) and 2 PhD students in obstetrics and gynecology and public health both at the university of Washington and University of Nairobi.
My work focuses on HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, Health Professionals training, mentorship and use of Information technologies in research and training. I lead the University of Nairobi Partnership in Innovative Medical Education for Kenya (PRIME-Kenya) project. I also direct the University of Nairobi HIV Capacity Building Fellowship Program that supports the Kenyan National HIV AIDS response by training program managers and leaders. I have over 100 peer reviewed papers in international journals and I am currently the PI of a community based cohort study on HIV infection risk and pregnancy intention that is enrolling couples Western Kenya.
