Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, Santa Monica, CA The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation (DSLRF), an accredited 501(c) (3) public charity, has a mission to eradicate breast cancer and improve the quality of women's health through innovative research, education, and advocacy.

The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation seeks a proven scholar and innovator as our first Director of Epidemiology to lead the Health of Women Study with our colleagues at City of Hope, a first of its kind online, international cohort study exploring new ways to democratize research on breast cancer and other diseases as well as methods to open up the research process. The Health of Women Study is a partnership between the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center. Candidates should possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit and earned doctoral degree; have an established record of academic research, particularly at the graduate level; and have a demonstrated capacity to secure external funding to support research. She or he should be willing to challenge current approaches to population research and explore new models. Additionally, the candidate should have a capacity for leadership in a non-profit setting and be able to foster collaboration in a multidisciplinary group, among internal and external research partners and funders.

The Director will report to the Executive Director and will work very closely with our colleagues at City of Hope. The Director will have a support staff of one Manager, who is currently managing the Study.

Principal Duties

The Director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of this large scale, online international, epidemiology study examining risk factors for breast cancer and long term survivorship issues for breast cancer survivors. It is critical for this individual to feel comfortable leading a new and innovative project, with a demanding and dynamic timeline and goals. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director and the Study Manager, as well as our colleagues at City of Hope to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for the future of the study, ways to expand, and ways to create a data sharing platform to support collaboration with other researchers.

The Director will also be responsible for actively writing and soliciting funding for the project. Working with the existing project manager for the Health of Women Study, and colleagues at City of Hope, the Director will oversee all aspects of data analysis, data cleaning, creating questionnaires and ways to report results to our participants and the research community. This individual will be part of the leadership team for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, and again, critical to possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and work well within the core values of the organization, which are:

Experience, Education and Skills

  • Doctoral degree required (Ph.D) in epidemiology
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience
  • Passionate dedication to DSLRF's mission and goals
  • Deep understanding and appreciation of our core values
  • Confidence, intellectual prowess, and experience to collaborate effectively with internal and external funders, researchers, volunteers and staff
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, mission driven, small but nimble organization
  • Solid track record of grant writing; capacity to secure external funding
  • Willingness to challenge the status quo and develop new models for population research
