The Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences seeks a qualified candidate for a full time position as Research Assistant Professor in Outcomes and Epidemiology in Nashville, Tennessee. This position initially will be a non-tenure track position with the expectation of transfer to tenure track position once sufficient extramural funding has been achieved. This position will have the responsibility of establishing and leading the department in human communications outcomes research to evaluate patients who require Otolaryngology care for communication disorders, to determine the epidemiological impact of related disorders, to analyze effectiveness and safety of treatment and to evaluate outcomes, toxicities, quality of life, economics and health care delivery in this population. The successful candidate ideally should have a particular interest and experience in comparative effectiveness research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and lead an independent outcome research program.
  • Obtain extramural funding for communication outcomes research.
  • Drive collaborative translational studies.
  • Work with the Otolaryngology Outcomes Research Group in developing outcome and epidemiology research within the Department.
  • Collaborate with the Vanderbilt Center for Surgical Quality and Outcomes Research and bridge the Department of Otolaryngology and the Vanderbilt Institute for Medicine and Public Health.


  • Graduate PhD, ScD or equivalent degree in Public Health, Clinical Epidemiology, or Health Service Research. Graduate students completing their training in 2013 or 2014 are eligible.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in research and productivity in publications.
  • Substantial experience in the use of databases and data quality management, study design and analysis, cohort recruitment and retention, study implementation, and biospecimen management.
  • Considerable experience in study design and conduct of clinical and observational studies is essential.
  • First-hand experience building research infrastructure and resources as a part of a research strategic plan is highly valued.
