Community Trainers/Health Education Advocates

 

Project partners who serve as resource people in the community for accessing health information online; these partners are paid stipends for initial 20 hours of training and services

 

Have commitment to community service and community health; Are bi-lingual with basic computer skills; Have interest in health information; Have time to volunteer after initial paid-for hours; have the confidence of their respective community and commitment to fulfill responsibilities and tasks of their role.

 

 

1. Learn the curriculum                                                                            2. Teach the curriculum to other community members (offer a series of classes)                                                                                                 3. Find health information for the community                                                             4. Volunteer Training Coordinators

 

Project partners who teach the community trainers/health education advocates how to access health information online, and who support the trainers in the initial stage of their community service role; these partners volunteer 20-30 hours.  

 

Have background working with computer or health information technology, training programs, and/or immigrant and refugee communities; Are volunteers who commit to fulfilling the responsibilities and tasks of their role.

 

 

1.Learn Training Curriculum 

2.Identify and recruit two community trainers/health educators

3. Identify training location 

4. Train the trainers 

5. Maintain contact with project coordinator to report significant problems, successes, needs, etc.

6. Offer consultation support to trainers who are fulfilling their roles 

7. Complete and return feedback and training evaluation materials

Community Organizations

 

Project partners whose boards and members may recommend candidates for "community trainer/health education advocate" roles; computer labs to be locations for trainings and services. 

 

Are recognized by Harborview and the City of Seattle as community based organizations that represent a significant portion of the target communities; Are voluntarily participating in the project for community health benefit

 

 

1. Provide (when available*) the location and computers for the training series and for the health education community service  2. Recommend Trainers/Health Education Advocates

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CCMs (Harborview's Caseworker/   Cultural Mediators)

 

Project partners who may recommend candidates for "community trainer/health advocate" roles, and who will be available for consultation by training and project coordinators

 

Serve as community liaisons in their job positions at Harborview

 

 

1. (optional) attend the training coordinators’ workshop
2. Assist the training coordinator in identifying community members and computer labs to participate in the training program; make recommendations and assist with contacts
3. Provide occasional consultation to the training coordinators and trainers

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Community Technology Centers & Computer Labs

Project partner who is responsible for guiding the project toward fulfilment of its objectives by providing administrative and hands-on management and troubleshooting; partner who commits to spending .5FTE (20 hours/week) on this project, which includes the training program and the development of new patient and provider education materials.

 

Commissioned by the National Library of Medicine to perform job role; Eight months experience working with project partners in the positions of Immigrant Communities Grants Program Coordinator and EthnoMed Staffperson at Harborview; Received UW bachelor degree in Cultural Anthropology; Several years experience living abroad and volunteering as a grassroots community organizer.

These health sciences librarians have developed similar training materials in previous work they have done with minority communities.
