TIPS FOR EMPLOYERS

What to bring to the 4 th Annual Evans School Career Fair

  1. A display about the organization, its mission, employment opportunities, etc.
Some employers in the past have brought the following:
    • Banners and/or posters
    • Table displays
    • Table covers with organization logo
    • Various giveaways
  2. Literature and brochures about the organization.
  3. Literature about job and internship opportunities available in the organization.
Literature often focuses on the following:
    • Various types of entry level and more senior opportunities within the organization
    • Career paths within the organization
    • Training within the organization
    • Education and GPA requirements (if any)
    • How to apply
  4. Application forms, if necessary.
  5. Business cards or material with organization names and contact information.
  6. Some employers bring information on resume and cover letter development.
    This information may include:
    • Tips about how to develop application materials; some specifically for the organization.
    • Information on how recruiters and managers review and evaluate application materials.
  7. A list of alumni from the Evans School of Public Affairs (formally known as the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington).
    • Talk to these individuals to make sure they don't mind being on the list.
    • Ask them if they will consider being alumni contacts for the organization if students have any questions.

Tips for the Day of the Career Fair

  1. Schedule or bring enough people to operate rotating shifts.
The timeframe of the Career Fair, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, is designed to give students enough time, regardless of their schedules, to attend the fair and speak with employers like you. This is a long period for just one person to maintain a booth and speak to students. Make sure you have sufficient representatives to give each other several breaks. Please make sure a representative is there through the end. Some students may not be able to attend until the very end because they work during the day.
  2. Dress Comfortably.
Dress in comfortable clothing that will allow you to stand for long periods of time, speak with numerous students and be in constant motion. Also think about your shoes. Make sure they are very comfortable and feel and fit good on your feet.
  3. Bring enough literature and handouts.
  4. Plan ahead of time who will attend the career fair. Develop literature with contact names so you can hand it directly to the student. Bring adequate handouts to distribute to students. In previous years, we've had anywhere between 100-150 students attend this event.
