Health in the Context of Italian Culture

2007 Exploration Seminar in Vicenza, Italy

**THIS PROGRAM IS FULL AND NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS**

Program Director: Janet Lenart ~
Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems
Dates of Instruction: September 1 to September 22, 2007

This Exploration Seminar is open to both UW undergraduate and graduate students.Access to health care is guaranteed in the Italian constitution.  What is the historical context that resulted in this right, and how is it implemented today?  How does Italy minimize health disparities among vulnerable populations such as new immigrants? What is the role of the European Union in relation to health outcomes in Italy? How do health professions differ between Italy and the United States?  Italy is known for good food, strong family ties, vibrant social life, and fast drivers.  How true are these stereotypes?  What are some characteristics of the Italian culture that impact health outcomes?  How do health behaviors and outcomes compare between Italy and the United States?  These are the issues that will be explored in this seminar.

This seminar will provide a cross-cultural experience in which health outcomes and health systems in Italy are examined in the context of recent Italian history, the socio-cultural environment, and the European Union.  It is anticipated that the participants will develop a greater understanding of their own perspective on health in the “mirror” of this cross-cultural experience.

The seminar will take place in Vicenza, Italy. Vicenza is a small city in Northern Italy, famous for its Renaissance architecture.  Talks will be given by local scholars, health care providers, public health professionals, and community members. Visits will be made to a variety of sites such as health care facilities, cheese & olive oil factories, and historical locations in Vicenza, Padova, Verona and Venice.  In addition, students will explore the concept of health in Italy through readings, discussion, cultural and social events, and writing.

Acceptance into the course is based on a written application and interview.  Classes will be taught in English.  Italian language proficiency is not required, however an introductory Italian course is highly recommended.

Participants will earn 5 credits of UCONJ 410, “Health in the Context of Italian Culture,” or CHID 471 Europe Study Abroad (I&S) .  Participants should check with their advisors to determine how these credits can count towards departmental requirements.

Student Costs:
$ 2,000 Program fee
$ 200 IPE Fee

Additional costs include round trip travel to Vicenza, health insurance, meals, course materials and personal expenses. The program fee includes instruction costs, lodging, field trips, and some meals.
