Dates of Instruction: September 1 - 25, 2009

The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), headquartered in London, England, is paving the way in setting standards for the world economy. This Exploration Seminar to London will be a rare and unique opportunity to focus study on International Reporting Standards (IFRS). Students who choose this seminar will enjoy the following curriculum:

Gain a working knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS);
Meet with business financial leaders to discuss IFRS pros and cons;
Meet with the major accounting firms in London to compare and contrast IFRS with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Meet with university accounting students and professors in London to gain an understanding of how IFRS is being presented in the classrooms.

There will also be plenty of time to enjoy the sights and sounds of a very dynamic and extraordinary city.

Wonder through Trafalgar Square.
Visit Westminister Abbey and the Tower of London.

buckinghampalaceguard This will be a focused learning experience that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. Gain a professional advantage by learning specific knowledge about international accounting standards that employers are looking for. The major accounting firms are gearing up for the transition to IFRS that is being proposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Credits: Students will earn 5 credits for ACCTG 490. Participants should check with their advisors to determine how these credits count towards departmental requirements.

Requirements: Because of the accounting focus for this seminar, a prerequisite of Accounting 215 or equivalent will be necessary. There will be 2 pre-trip class sessions required to get up to speed on accounting standards. There will also be a required writing assignment at the end of the seminar comparing and contrasting IFRS with GAAP.

The program fee includes local lodging in London in either a local university dormitory or a hostel with shared rooms. This will also include the cost of a one-month tube pass for local transportation.
Additional costs include: return airfare to London, meals, health insurance and personal spending money.
