Bangalore, India
Explorations in Social Justice
Dates of Instruction: August 21 to September 15
Program Director: Anu Taranath (Department of English)
Bangalore is fast becoming known as the computer technology center of India. This rapid growth brings a complicated mix of benefits and challenges to the city, some of which we will be studying during our time in Bangalore. During this four week experience, students will have the opportunity to be exposed to academic and activist understandings of history, culture, power, human rights, and justice within an Indian context. Field trips will acquaint participants with the city's rich cultural offerings, and class time will focus on developing an understanding of Indian social politics and issues. In addition, we will interact with several Bangalore based NGOs (non-governmental organizations) who work on issues of children's rights, women's education and empowerment, gay and lesbian rights, and urban poor.
Participants will earn 5 credits of CHID 474 – Asia Study Abroad (I&S). Participants should also check with their academic advisors prior to enrolling to determine how these credits may apply to major requirements.
Student Costs:
$ 1,750 Program fee
$ 200 IPE Fee
Additional costs include international travel to and from India, visa, health insurance and vaccines, meals, course materials and personal expenses.
