India: An Offshoring Destination and Emerging Business Market

The economy of India is the world’s fourth largest and its population of more than 1 billion is second only to China. This Exploration Study tour will focus on India as an offshore business partner and as an emerging global market. After a one week required classroom orientation in Seattle, students will spend 17 days in India and participate in a series of company visits in three locations: (1) New Delhi; (2) Mumbai; (3) Hyderabad. We will focus on the two fastest growing and most profitable business sectors, namely Information Technology and PHARMA. Company visits will be conducted with such companies as Wipro, Spectramind, Vcustomer, Microsoft Indian Development Center, Indian School of Business, ICICI Bank, Tata Group, and Bombay Stock Exchange as well as PHARMA firms such as Lupin, Aurobindo Pharma Limited and Sun Pharmaceuticals.
Class assignments include reading the assigned texts, participating in the weeklong orientation and briefing seminars on the Seattle campus, preparation of a company analysis and presentation of an executive briefing, attendance of all lectures, company visits, and tours (4-6 hours daily on week days). Optional tours to the Taj Mahal, Agra and other sites of interests (fees covered by the program) will be arranged during the weekends. At the end of the course, each student will present an analytical paper on an aspect of doing business in India.
Goals for the exploration study tour
- Acquire and understanding of the challenges and opportunities of global business generally and India specifically.
- Acquire deep smarts regarding two India industry sectors, IT and PHARMA. .
- Learn about global culture and business etiquette.
- Provide a rich cultural experience.
- Inspire intellectual curiosity about the challenges of other developing countries.
This exploration tour is particular appropriate for business administration students in any concentration, engineering students, and pharmacy students. However, students from any discipline can participate.
Participants will earn 5 credits in their choice of the following classes
- MGMT 490 Special Topics in Management
- BA 300 Foreign Study-Business Administration
- B BUS 479 Special Topics in Management Bothell
Participants should also check with their academic advisors to determine how these credits may apply to major requirements. Student Costs:
$ 2,800 Program fee (includes instruction, lodging, field trips and required travel in India).
$ 200 IPE Fee
Additional costs include international travel to and from India, visa, health insurance and vaccines, meals, course materials and personal expenses.
