Mombasa, Kenya
Swahili, a resilient culture through the ages
Dates of Instruction: August 21 to September 15, 2006
Program Director: Seyed Maulana ~ American Ethnic Studies
Mombasa, an ancient Swahili town, is also Kenya's second largest city. It is one of the largest and oldest trade ports in east Africa. Since pre-colonial times, trade with Arabic, Persian and far eastern countries has influenced and helped shape this diverse region. It has embraced cultural and ethnic diversity while remaining strongly rooted in Swahili customs and beliefs. Visitors enjoy the beautiful white sand beaches that sprawl along the Indian Ocean coastline north and south of the city with a laid back culture all of its own: “Hakuna matata”. The rich history of the Swahili Civilization along the coast of East Africa can be experienced today from the ancient Jumba Ruins with a mosque by the sea, to the Portuguese-built Fort Jesus, which stands tall in the heart of Mombasa's historic district of Old Town.
During this exploratory visit students will be immersed in the Swahili culture. Studying its long history, the struggle to remain strong during colonial rule, and the way it continues to impact the coastal region today. Students will have the opportunity to experience this culture first hand with home stays with Swahili families. They will also visit well-preserved archeological sites and early Swahili town near and around the city. Respected community leaders will also be providing lectures and tours on a variety of cultural aspects, including Islam, traditional music, weddings, ceremonies, funerals and the day-to-day life in Mombasa. Although the ability to speak Swahili is not necessary for this trip, learning a few key phases will be helpful and will go a long way with the locals.
Participants will earn 5 credits of either AFRAM 499 or CHID 473. Participants should check with their advisors to determine how these credits can apply toward departmental requirements. Student Costs:
$ 2,460 Program fee
$ 200 IPE Fee
