Ann Streissguth was a participant at the Consensus Summit on FASD, held
in Washington DC on April 8, 2004. Her statement follows:
"The consensus on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a
huge step forward in relaying to the public what research has already
clearly shown - namely that the brain is more important than the face in
understanding the impact of prenatal alcohol on the developing child.
This consensus should open doors for the early detection of babies at a
time in life when their mothers can get help with their alcohol problems
and the babies can get into early intervention programs. FASD has
important implications for both prevention and intervention."

- Update: There was a major breakthough in NZ, July, 2001.
The NZ Alcohol Advisory Committee and the national college of gynae's have
finally listened to the FAS trust and have agreed to change their
recommendations to pregnant women - up until last month, their official
stance was that up to 15 drinks a week was fine. As a result of the
meeting they are now recommending to women zero consumption. Great
news!
- Another Update: As of February 1, 2005, the Liquor Licence Act
in
Ontario, Canada, requires certain premises to post signs warning women
that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorder. Read more about
