With another UW physician, Dr, Paul Pottinger, I’m helping to establish a 3-month annual course in tropical medicine in East Africa. Based in both Tanzania and Uganda, this course accepts 60 physicians each year (one-third from Africa, two-thirds from Europe, North America, and elsewhere). This course is supported in part by a grant from UW’s Dept. of Global Health. The course is governed by a five-institution consortium: UW, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, Makerere University (Uganda), and Kilimanjaro Medical Center (Tanzania).
Since 2005 I’ve served as a Medical Officer on IMSuRT- (International Medical-Surgical Response Team) West, a US federal disaster response team based at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. My six deployments have included New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Port-au-Prince, Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.
