Since the program's inception in 1972, the primary focus of Family Medicine Spokane has been to educate and train quality, compassionate family physicians to practice upon graduation in the underserved, rural and urban areas of the Pacific and Intermountain West. This community-based program is a fully accredited Family Medicine residency program located in Spokane, Washington on the Eastern side of Washington State. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Family Practice last reviewed the program in January of 2005. This program is Affiliated with the University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine and is sponsored by Sacred Heart Medical Center where the majority of hospital-based rotations are conducted. In addition, rotations are completed at Deaconess Medical Center, and Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

Family Medicine Spokane accepts seven residents per year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). In addition to the 21 residents in Family Medicine Spokane, we currently have 3 residents in Family Medicine Spokane Rural Training Track. One of those residents is completing her first year in Spokane and 2 are in Colville, Washington.

Curriculum
The curriculum is designed (thirteen 4-week block rotations per year) around a problem oriented approach to enhance the medical, obstetrical, and surgical skills which prepare family physicians to practice competently and comfortably in an urban or rural setting. The Behavioral Science, Ethics, Practice Management, and Procedural Curriculum is also taught longitudinally throughout the three years through orientation, didactics, workshops, conferences, specialty clinics, and the ambulatory care clinic.

Family Medicine Center
The Family Medicine Center is located in an area of Spokane predominated by health care facilities. It is within walking distance of both Sacred Heart Medical Center and Deaconess Medical Center. This ambulatory care center provides 26 exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms, a minor surgery room, a geriatric and counseling interview room, lab, business and administrative offices. Conference rooms are located within the facility and accommodate both large and small groups with teleconferencing capabilities. Residents work in a team in the family practice center consisting of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year residents, a primary nurse, and a receptionist. Each team has a panel of patients to facilitate continuity of care. In an urgent situation, patients may be scheduled with a member of another team. The clinic averages 2,271 outpatient visits, 300 inpatient visits, and 50 outpatient procedures per month.

Faculty
Led by Gary R. Newkirk, MD, Program Director, Family Medicine Spokane's faculty is comprised of 6 full-time and 3 part-time Board Certified Family Physicians, a Pharm D., Behavioral Scientist, and two Physician Assistants. Community Family Physicians precept regularly in the family practice center. Family Medicine Spokane continues to enjoy an outstanding level of support from our geographic, medical, and economic communities.
