Family Medicine of Southwest Washington
Established in 1995, Family Medicine of Southwest Washington is an unopposed, community-based, University of Washington affiliated program sponsored by PHSW, located in Vancouver, Washington. We are part of PeaceHealth , a regional healthcare system serving communities in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. Bordering the Columbia River, PeaceHealth Southwest (PHSW) is a 460 bed healthcare facility serving the Portland Metro and Southwest Washington regions.
Besides active Cardiac, Orthopedic, and Neurosciences programs, PHSW has the west coast's busiest ER north of San Francisco. At 3,000 deliveries a year, PHSW has one of the busiest Family Birth Centers in the Portland/Vancouver Metropolitan area.
FMSW has 22 faculty members, most full-time. Our rounding group of 11 includes 8-family physicians with OB privileges in addition to adult medicine, 1 internist/endocrinologist, and an obstetrician. Additional clinic-based faculty includes a pharmacist, and behavioral scientist. A national residency leader in patient centered medical home development, FMSW features an Advanced Access care model, chronic disease management programs for diabetes, chronic pain, asthma, ADHD, and childhood obesity. We also conduct group visits for diabetes, childhood obesity, and chronic pain. These activities are facilitated by our EMR, the newest iteration of McKesson’s Horizon Ambulatory Care. As part of health system integration, we will transition to a robust version of Epic in late summer of 2014.
FMSW is a rich learning environment. Residents enjoy autonomy with support, consultation with enthusiasm, mentoring with care from both community physicians and core faculty, and the opportunity to teach medical students on core, elective and Sub-I rotations. FMSW continues to champion a spirit of community involvement through various major annual initiatives, including:
• Sports Medicine Program providing more than 400 free sports physicals for high school athletes annually.
• Breast/Cervical cancer screening programs
• Team Physician services for local high school and college athletic events.
• Participation in community Free Clinic for the underserved and homeless (Weekly).
• Free office procedures for the uninsured, in partnership with our community Free Clinic.
Other attractive features include a Night-Float call system, at least 1 call free weekend per rotation for R1s, 2-3 call free weekends per rotation for all seniors, and full time presence of hospital-based supervising residents to assist with intern call. FMSW runs its own adult medicine, pediatric, and obstetrical services in the hospital.
FMSW takes pride in training great family doctors for today's complex practice environment. While some program graduates practice in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, New Mexico, Connecticut, Idaho, Montana, Mississippi, Oregon, Texas and Utah, most practice in various rural, urban and suburban Washington communities. Almost half of our residents have remained in the Portland-Vancouver Metro area.
Enjoy the balance of a high quality, broad-based educational experience, the cultural allure of the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area, and the Pacific Northwest lifestyle. Live, work, and play in the shadows of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood, explore the breathtaking landscape of the Columbia River Gorge, and walk along the shores of the scenic northern Oregon Coast.
