Seattle, WA and WWAMI Region: The University of Washington School of Medicine Underserved Pathway is recruiting physicians from across the WWAMI region, who practice in rural or urban medically underserved settings with underserved populations, to mentor medical students working toward careers with underserved communities domestically and abroad. Less structured than a formal preceptorship, this mentorship provides students the opportunity to learn from an experienced role model who can field questions, discuss residency and career plans, and generally support students in their education and professional development, focusing on their commitment to the underserved. Mentors and students are matched based on geography, common interests, and other factors. Students and mentors meet at least once per quarter, in person or via phone or email, for the duration of his or her time in the Underserved Pathway. Students consistently identify the mentorship as the most beneficial component of the Underserved Pathway program. Physician mentors have access to support from Underserved Pathway faculty and staff, and the website that contains a variety of resources for mentoring. The Underserved Pathway is housed in the Department of Family Medicine, and supports students with a broad range of practice interests.
