Medical Student Education

Welcome to the web site for the family medicine medical student education section at the University of Washington.

Our mission is:

  • To develop and support innovative and high-quality educational experiences in family medicine for all University of Washington students
  • To train medical students who will later serve the evolving needs of the people of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI)
  • To support the development of careers in rural and urban underserved locations

This site provides information about our required and elective courses and programs.

Our elective courses and programs include a service-learning, interdisciplinary program--the Community Health Advancement Program, opportunities for continuity clinical experiences during the first and second year via an introductory preceptorship, and special topics such as spirituality, geriatrics, and hospice and end-of-life care training. Family Medicine also administers the Rural and Underserved Opportunities Program (R/UOP) where students spend four weeks in a rural or urban underserved medical practice during the summer between their first and second years.

Clinical electives include advanced preceptorships in patient-centered communication and in the WWAMI region, the United States, and in other countries.

The department's required third-year, six-week clerkship is taught at over twenty-five sites in the WWAMI states. These diverse sites include rural and urban underserved communities, private community practices, HMO's, residency training programs and community and Native American health care centers.

Please let us know if we can provide you with additional information about the department's medical student education offerings.
